Welcome back for 2023. We have had an amazing start to the year, as I walk around the school and visit classes, all of the students have smiles on their faces and are already engaged in their learning.

This year our school continues to focus on our explicit improvement agenda of: being seen as a leader in best practice with our Positive Culture for Learning; continuing to contextualising the Australian Curriculum; and, our whole school approach to teaching and learning. This year we are focusing on embedding mathematical inquiry across the school using re(Solve). 2023 is the final year of our current strategic planning cycle and we will be participating a school review later on this year, the findings will inform the next four years of planning as we continue to strive for excellence at our school.

This year NAPLAN has been moved to Term 1 so our Year 3 and 5 students will be participating in literacy and numeracy tests from 15 March. The results will provide us with a snapshot of how our students are performing in reading, writing, spelling, punctuation, grammar and numeracy. We are always very proud of the positive attitudes and effort of our students at Maggie.

Thank you to all of the families for ensuring that students have been at school every day and on time to start the year, this sets your child up for success in the future. Did you know that if your child misses just 20 minutes each day, that is nearly a full year of school missed over thirteen years? One day a week missed adds up to two and half years of schooling missed! Our week one attendance rate was 93.2% - keep up the great work.

Please make sure that your current contact details are up to date in the school office, this year we will be emailing student reports rather than posting them so it is even more important that you ensure that we have your correct details. If you could also check that you have provided us with at least one other emergency contact, preferably someone on the island, that we can call, just in case.

I am very much looking forward to a great year, working in collaboration with staff, students, families and the community, to ensure that our Maggie Island kids are realising their potential and striving for excellence in 2023. Don't forget if you have any concerns or worries to send me an email at kcons5@eq.edu.au or call the office to make a time to come and see me.

Happy days...
