World Ocean Day

One of 14 aquacultured giant clams in the two TOBMI Magnetic Island Snorkel Trails.  The clams were reared from eggs 31 yr. ago by Dr. Rick Braley (Aquasearch Aquarium).
World Oceans Day (WOD) was officially designated by the United Nations for 8 June each year.  Since the inception of WOD in 2009, Magnetic Island has held events for most of the years.  This year an educational program by 3 local marine biology and ecology businesses (Aquasearch Aquarium, Reef Ecotours, Reef Ecologic) will be brought to the school on Thursday 8 June 2017.  Short presentations will be made in the library and there will also be representatives of Marine Parks and AIMS in the General Assembly area  to talk with students.  After the educational section the students will create a parade 'walk to the ocean' at nearby Nelly Bay beach starting about noon.  The students can carry and display  pictures they have made of marine organisms or signs to honour our oceans.  They will all have lunch at the beach and then carry out a beach cleanup for the practical side of the WOD.
